Promotion – Let God Do It For You

Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

Bible Text: Psalm 75:5-7

In June 2003, one London newspaper carried a report on a study in which researchers found that, sleeping with the boss, blackmail and sabotage are among the favourite ways to get promoted. The survey showed that one in five workers regularly claimed credit for other people’s work, while a third have tried to get a colleague fired. One in ten had an office affair just to further their carrier. Unfortunately this futile attempt by men to seek vain glory is not limited to the UK alone, neither is it unpractised among some who profess to be believers. Overrated opinions of self (pride), impatience, discontent and peer pressure are some of the main drivers of this dubious pursuit of undue promotion.

In our day to day endeavours, we should strive to excel. We should desire promotion. But let God be the one to do it. He is the perfect Judge who alone can determine when we are ready to move up and also make it happen. The horn, a symbol of power and authority, can sometimes be the symbol of pride and arrogance. When God exalts our horn, then it shall be as the horn of a unicorn. If we try and do it ourselves, then God is left with no option but to put us back down where we belong.

God is your glory and the lifter up of your head!!

Be encouraged, Jesus loves you!
